The valley of the mills.
Guided excursion from Ravello to Amalfi.

We start the walk in Ravello, a medieval village overlooking the Amalfi Coast at 350 meters above the sea. Ravello  is also famous for its yearly music festival dedicated to Richard Wagner. Here we can admire two villas with their gardens hanging over the seashore, Villa Rufolo (XIII century) and Villa Cimbrone (early XX century). We walk through medieval hamlets, across lemon terraces, and reach the bottom of the valley, where the river Canneto flows. It is a wooded, shaded  and fresh area,  thanks to the torrent. The valley looks like a long canyon between high rock walls.

On the river, thanks to the energy obtained using the flowing water, many industrial activities have developed over the centuries: iron foundries, mills and paper mills, of which remain precious traces. A state’s owned natural reserve of an extension of about 400 h. has been established to protect the unique ecosystem present in the bottom of the valley, in which still survive  prehistoric relics plant (like the Woodwardia radicans).

End of the trip in Amalfi.
